Accredited Irish Language Course for visiting students 2025-2026
The aim of the courses below is to give basic knowledge and understanding of Irish to students who have no prior knowledge of the language. Through these courses, the students’ communicative skills will be developed to enable them to interact through Irish in a range of basic everyday situations.
All courses are based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, Level A1-A2.
Classes will be held in Áras na Gaeilge, an Irish-language centre on campus, that functions through the medium of Irish. Áras na Gaeilge also has an Irish-language seating area with coffee and vending machine. All classes will be held in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. Course materials are included in the price.
The 5 ECTS Course begins on Tuesday 16 September 2025.

15 Meán Fómhair/September – Beginning of Term; classes run for ten weeks
28 Samhain/November – End of Semester Written Examination: 10:00 am to 11:00 am
28 Samhain/November End of Semester Oral Examination: These will run between 11:30am and 3:30pm
You must contact us in advance if you cannot be present for the end of semester exam. No other examination dates will be organized for students except in cases of illness (a doctor’s certificate must be provided) or the exam time clashes with a lecture.
Your choices are as follows:
1. Students staying for ONE semester
A) Irish for Beginners – 5 ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System)
Module Code: GDT 1011
Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge is offering an Irish language course aimed at students with no prior knowledge of the Irish language, consisting of one 2-hour class per week. This class will focus on listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.
Assessment Procedures
As well as continuous assessment, course participants will sit an oral and written examination at the end of the semester. Students will also be required to complete 5 assessments during the course.
Fee & Registration
You must register online on Canvas; a fee of €30 to cover course materials, can be paid in Room 103 in Áras na Gaeilge before the course begins.
Provisional class times are as follows:
Tuesday 10.00 a.m. –12.00 noon in Room 116
or
Wednesday 11.00 a.m. – 13.00 p.m. in Room 214
or
Thursday 10.00 a.m. – 12.00 noon in Room 104

2. Students staying for TWO semesters
Irish for Beginners (15 ECTS)

GA8170 - Listening & Speaking 1 A1
GA8171 - Reading & Writing 1 A1
Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge is offering a one-year Irish language course with certification consisting of one 3-hour class per week. This class will also focus on listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.
Assessment Procedures
As well as term assessments (two during the year), course participants will sit an oral and written examination at the end of the academic year. Students will also be required to complete 10 assessments during the course.
Fee & Registration
Students can register and pay a €60 fee to cover course materials in Room 103 in Áras na Gaeilge.
The above course begins on Tuesday, 23 September 2025 (between 6 agus 9pm) in Room 214 in Áras na Gaeilge.
